Meeting Academician Zhong Nanshan in Melbourne
At 89, upright, sharp and entirely present — a standard the rest of us can only aim at.
IRI had the honour of meeting Academician Zhong Nanshan in Melbourne. At 89 he remains upright, energetic and sharp — a standard for the rest of us.
As of 2025, three medical scientists have received the Medal of the Republic, China’s highest state honour: Academician Zhong Nanshan (2020, respiratory medicine), Professor Tu Youyou (2019, pharmacology and Chinese medicine, for the discovery of artemisinin), and Academician Wang Zhenyi (2024, haematology, for differentiation therapy in acute promyelocytic leukaemia).
